In this previous post we began to look at some video examples of what I call “game style moments” – certain situations in the game where the game style you coach is on display. Examples in the first post were entries into the forward line, slow play at half back and defenders positioning when opposition forwards push up to midfield stoppages.
Below are some more of these moments for you to consider what your coaching approach is for these situations…..
Clip 1 (play for about 20 seconds): Winning possession on half back flank
How do you want to move the ball?
- Switch the play
- Back down the line (as Sturt do in this clip)
- Run and handball through corridor
- Short kick into corridor
- Other?
Clip 2 (play for about 20 seconds): Exiting defense via the flank
What is your preferred next movement through the midfield?
- Kick to a forward leading up through the wing
- Kick back into the corridor (as Sturt do)
- Run and carry as far as possible
- Kick to a midfielder or high half forward breaking wide or back on the 45
- Other?
Clip 3: Opposition win the ball in your forward line
How do you prepare to defend the ball coming out?
- Players get one on one with their direct opponent
- Certain areas of the ground are covered (ie a semi-zone)
- Most dangerous opposition players are covered first, then other players defend space
- Defenders push up the ground in a zone to assist the midfielders in locking the ball in
- Other?
