Oh no! The opposition have worked out our system/style of play – what now?

Welcome back to teamsportcoaching.com

Here is the scenario. You are a new coach implementing a system or style of play. In Australian Football (AFL) this could be systems related to counter-attack plays out of defense, kick ins, stoppage setups/exit plays, or forward entry. You carefully design and implement your training activities and teaching methods to fast-track your players in their execution of the system. Along comes the competition phase (aka real matches) and suddenly the opposition work out what you are doing and try to counter it.

What now?

    Very good points.

I am applying for a senior coaching position in country S.A and I have a system with structures that I want to use.

I have been toying with the idea to leave my ideas out of the interview as my Dad (who I was going to get as my assistant) is a liitle old school and doesn’t necessarily like the way the game is headed. Yet, he has the ability to coach those coachable moments like no other coach.

But by you mentioning about the little things, I am sure I will make it all work.

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for contributing to the site.

An interesting situation you have described. One thing that did catch my attention is that you are coaching in country SA. I would say just have a good think about the types of systems and structures you are going to implement and whether you have the training time to teach them properly. I guess I am saying be careful if you are thinking of applying systems from AFL level at country level. Having a system is the way to go (obviously I am a big push for that), however at your level of coaching the important decision is how difficult it is to learn that system based on available training time.
